Cognitive and Spiritual Benefits of Buddhist Retreats in Remote, Nature-Based Settings -

The spiritual benefits of a retreat in the Buddhist tradition have been well established scripturally and theologically but there is only a small, albeit growing body of contemporary research to identify the benefits from a Western scientific approach.  Phenomenological studies have identified common themes experienced by Buddhist practitioners who have undertaken retreats.  These include increased concentration, self-awareness, and emotional stability (Slagter, Lutz, Greischar, Francis, Nieuwenhuis, Davis, & Davidson, 2007).  This study aims to explore and identify experiential patterns by coding and analyzing the reflections of a small number of retreatants.
